While the Beast may not have been the best at tactics, but he was still better than the pure animalistic instinct the werewolf had. So while he might have had the time to let go normally, he didn't think there was a need to until he was slammed into the tree with a yelp. It wasn't enough to knock him off completely, but it did weaken his grip significantly.
