I Want My Money Back!

Character/s: Renne; anybody
Time: Sunday, August 14 -- Midday
Location: Arcanarum; The Forest's Edge
Summary: Renne's rather sick of the headaches that have thus far blocked his biological responses. This amid the stench of magic is enough to make him roil! So...he's out to do a little exploring, find material for a proper cane.... And maybe produce a little mischief.
Warnings: None really, though there is some language. Open to all, of course.

The headaches had persisted for...how could he calculate time? Not sure he wants to try answering that question right now, Renne dons his "suit of armour" in at least some attempt to protect himself from the evils of Magic and begins on his way. Just where he intends to go is up for debate since you cannot very well find your way in the dark without a tool.

Perhaps...

Having at least an idea in his little head, the stubborn, bratty little bluething ventures carefully through the odd little magic-ridden town and to, eventually, its edge. He's not fond of the slightly damp ground but the still-moist air isn't so bad. First things first: Acquire material that isn't magic-soaked to fashion a proper cane. Re-learn walking upright (That shouldn't be too hard, should it?)

And finally: Figure or find out why these damnable headaches of his persist!

While there was a perfectly serviceable training area elsewhere on the island, Minato had little desire to get back into the swing of using a sword there. Even if the sword hadn't originally been stolen (and it had, though Minato had not been the one to steal it), he still wasn't sure he wanted to be practicing so near to other people until he'd gotten himself into fitter condition. Besides, it had seemed a nice day for a walk.

Thus, the early afternoon finds Minato a short ways outside of town, in a clear spot near the edge of the forest, running through various exercises with his sword. When he had arrived, of course, he had first paid his respects to the sword - not out of superstition or anything like that but because long before he'd returned to Iwatodai and actually had to rely on weapons to save his life, his iaido instructor had taught him that the sword, although it was in truth naught but a tool, was worthy of respect. It was worthy of those extra few moments of reflection and acknowledgement, because it was powerful, as a weapon, as a tool, as a symbol.

He wondered, as he performed the obeisance, if the old man remembered him, the quiet, troubled kid in foster-care next door, with the fascination with swords. (He'd always been grateful to the man for taking the time to help him, to give him something to channel his restlessness into.) He wondered, as he straightened and slipped the scabbard into his belt, if the old man were even still alive. Not that it really mattered now. But even so, his thoughts continued to drift as he began to work his way through the kata.

And now, further into the afternoon, Minato is still just letting his thoughts drift aimlessly, as he continues to shift through exercises, some actual real forms and others modified from strength-and-speed-building exercises he'd learned while on the kendo team in high school.

At first, Minato does not notice the newcomer, caught up as he is in the exercises and thoughts. This is the first time since he arrived here that he's really taken the time to really reflect on what happened before he fell asleep on the school roof and woke up here. And his thoughts make him all the more restless, so that he keeps going, though his arms and legs are aching from his exertions (which prompts a side train of thought about how he is abysmally out of practice and out of shape). He's not regretful, of course. No, and he wouldn't undo what he did for anything, but... he is a little sad.

But in any event, it isn't until he spins around, ready to slash at an imaginary foe approaching from behind, that he catches sight of an approaching blue -- something? And Minato freezes, staring, unsure if maybe this is another denizen or if it's a creature from the forest. Slowly, after a moment or two, Minato shifts position, changing his grip on his sword a little, just in case this is a creature from the forest, though as he stares, he finds himself doubting that idea. For one thing, the blue creature is coming from the wrong direction, and for another, gut intuition tells him that this newcomer probably isn't a threat.

Still, Minato remains wary, his dragon's tail flicking back and forth, its fins flexing a little in unconscious response to his edginess. He's not frightened, but he is uncertain. (Perhaps the reptilian or fishlike nature of this tail is responsible for any confusion over whether Minato is human. After all, he was temporarily a large serpentine dragon not all that long ago.)

"Who or what are you?" he calls out after a moment. It seems like a good first move.

"Renne." He repeats the word (a name, he guesses) as best he can, given a different jaw structure, his own accent and so on. He pauses after saying it, as if fixing it in his memory before he does anything else, and the pause goes on a little longer than intended as he sees this Renne's skin change, quite unexpectedly shifting colors and patterning. Minato's eyes widen, as he wonders what that means (a warning? Just something that happens? What?), and he stares for a moment more before finally answering.

"My name is Minato Arisato," he says, a little unsure if Renne is asking for his name or if the creature is just as unsure about what he is as he is of it.

Minato leans away a little as Renne sniffs him (as a rule, he's not the happiest with having his personal space invaded by someone unknown), flexing his fins uncomfortably, but then the creature twitches backward, and Minato relaxes. He decides that probably this creature really isn't a threat and so at last sheathes his sword.

He nods once to the second question, tail flicking again. "I'm human, though this place seems to want to turn me into a dragon..." But he isn't quite sure what Renne means by 'What you do?' so he doesn't answer that, figuring if it's important, Renne will rephrase it or ask again.

Minato shrugs (still unaware that Renne couldn't necessarily see that). "Did you read the letter you were given when you woke up here? It seems like the rulers of this place want us to replace characters from stories. Fairy tales and things." Or so he has gathered from learning about other people's letters in addition to his own.

But then Renne is asking about the sounds he made, and at the swishing sounds and gestures, Minato finally gets it - or at least gets what Renne is asking (though he thinks the gesturing and such is a little weird). "Oh -- I was practicing."

"Do words have... touch?" he repeats, puzzled for a moment, and he thinks about it. "No...? They're ink on paper, so you can't feel them..." He thinks this is an odd question, unless... wait... The sniffing and gesturing on top of this make him wonder, and he tilts his head, watching Renne closely - or, rather, watching Renne's eyes, though he's momentarily distracted by the latter questions.

"I'm... I guess I am a warrior of sorts. Or I was. Sort of." He's a little taken aback, as that is definitely not a description he would have used, but when he thinks about it, it sort of fits, even if it seems weird to call himself that. "But I was practicing forms for wielding a sword. ... to build up muscle memory and that sort of thing. "

"Oh. Do you still have the paper? I could read it for you, if you needed," he offers before slipping his hands into his pockets again. He shrugs again, even though he's picked up on the fact that Renne either can't see at all or at least can't see well, now. "Um... a few years, I guess? I've only really been... uh, serious about it for a year or so, though. I've never taught anyone swordplay before, though..."

Minato finds the color changes on Renne's skin fascinating and wonders what they mean, but he thinks it's probably a little weird to ask, so he doesn't. Maybe he'll figure it out on his own. He starts to shake his head and then thinks better of it.

"No, I don't have a teacher, right now, but I'm not sure if there's anyone who teaches swordplay on this island, anyway..."

[personal profile] fools_journey 2011-11-10 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
"Maybe." Minato shrugs, but then he blinks at the question about trees. "Um... what do you mean? Good for climbing? Or ... what?"
fools_journey: battle powers gun (??? huh?)

psh, it's okay! ♥

[personal profile] fools_journey 2011-11-14 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Minato finds the changing of Renne's skin fascinating to watch, and he waits while Renne straightens.

"For cane...? Oh! Hmm..." Minato trails off, looking around at the trees. "You know, I am not sure. What sort of cane do you want? I'm sorry, I've never made or used one, so I'm not entirely sure what one looks for..."
fools_journey: battle powers gun (I see)

[personal profile] fools_journey 2011-11-16 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
"All right." He nods, pondering this. "But... how long should it be? And how thick? Flexible? Very solid? That will determine what sort of tree we should get it from."

[personal profile] fools_journey 2011-11-17 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Minato shakes his head. "It's no trouble."

As he glances around at the trees again, wondering what type would be most what Renne wants, a dilemma occurs to him, and he voices it. "... I don't have anything to cut wood with, but maybe we can find a fallen branch that will work for now, and if need be, we can maybe find a saw or something later."
fools_journey: battle powers gun (Default)

[personal profile] fools_journey 2011-11-21 12:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Minato peers at the claws. "You won't damage them on the wood?" he asks just to make sure.

"Well, let's see if we can find a tree with a good branch for it, then."
fools_journey: battle powers gun (??? huh?)

[personal profile] fools_journey 2011-11-28 01:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Minato periodically looks back at Renne to make sure he isn't walking too fast or anything and also simply to watch him, because Renne is not quite like anything Minato has ever encountered. But Minato alternates between that and looking ahead at various trees, examining them and trying to remember what types they are. Although a few times over the years he's lived in smaller towns that have more greenery, for the most part he's lived in and around cities, so he's really not all that familiar with trees. Still, eventually they reach one that he thinks is an oak. It has acorns, any rate, or what look like acorns, so he stops, looking up at the branches, looking for one that might fit Renne's requirements. He's not actually sure if oak really is the best suited to what Renne wants, but he's sure that if it isn't, Renne'll tell him.

"I.. think there's a branch in this one that might work?"
fools_journey: battle powers gun (I -- wha...)

[personal profile] fools_journey 2011-12-02 11:52 am (UTC)(link)
Minato's eyes widen and he winces a bit as Renne runs face first into the tree. "Are you all right?" he asks, though the answer seems apparent as Renne shakes it off and actually bites the tree. Bites it. That -- Minato just stares a little. He supposes biting it might work for testing wood, though he's pretty sure his own jaw can't handle snapping chunks out of trees.

"Um... do you... need any help?"

He's not sure if Renne's just going to climb up the tree to find an appropriate branch or what, and especially in light of Renne just going ahead and biting the tree, Minato really has no expectations of what Renne will do.
fools_journey: battle powers gun (??? huh?)

[personal profile] fools_journey 2011-12-03 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
"Um -- I can reach that branch, if that's what you mean... Here, I'll hold it while you cut if, if you want...?"

And with that, he reaches up to take hold of the branch, hoping Renne doesn't smack his face on it again - that looks like it hurts.
fools_journey: battle powers gun (??? huh?)

[personal profile] fools_journey 2011-12-05 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's no trouble."

Minato does his best to hold the branch steady while Renne works, watching curiously as the little blue fellow works.

[personal profile] fools_journey 2011-12-07 10:57 am (UTC)(link)
When the branch detaches, Minato holds it up for a moment more before slowly lowering it and looking it over.

"Do you want me to break some of the offshoots off of the end, or will you do that yourself?"
fools_journey: battle powers gun (Default)

[personal profile] fools_journey 2011-12-08 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
"Hm? No, you needn't worry about paying me back in any way. It's fine," Minato replies, shaking his head as he strips off any leaves and carefully breaks off any twigs before waiting for Renne to be in a position where Minato can hand the stick off. He doesn't want Renne to smack into it again.
fools_journey: battle powers gun (slight smile)

[personal profile] fools_journey 2011-12-12 07:53 am (UTC)(link)
Minato gives the branch over and smiles a little. "Let me know if you need any more help with making the cane."
